During the COVD-19 pandemic, technology worker Angela Childs (Zoe Kravitz) who works for Amygdala Corporation perfects the order flow for their KIMI virtual assistant with a key selling point that sets it apart from SIRI or Alexa as it is constantly reviewed by human support staff so that it can be refined and improved.
Angela works at home after suffering from agoraphobia following the attacks some years ago, but keeping her neighbor Terry Hughes (Byron Bowers) with the two has formed a romantic relationship during the COVD lockdown. During Angela's review of KIMI orders, she encounters a stream of orders that seem to document what sounds like the murder of a woman (Erika Christensen). As Angela digs deeper, she meets opposition from the Amygdala corporate bureaucracy who fears it will corrupt their public with scandal and must now try to overcome her trauma to find out who was killed and why. KIMI marks the latest film by versatile director Steven Soderbergh and a new original film for HBO Max following Soderbergh's previous efforts, Let Them All Talk and No Sudden Move.
Written and produced by acclaimed screenwriter David Koepp, Koepp is in familiar territory after collaborating with David Fincher in 2002 on the hit home invasion film Panic Room which, despite its familiar traps, won critics and audiences with ' to directing style and performance. While the film takes on a well-trodden format inspired by Hitchcock's Rear Window, Koepp provides fresh spin-off material that reminds me of the excitement of Larry Cohen from the early 2000s like Phone Booth and Cellular in take emerging cellphone technology and apply it to classic thriller dropes. . What Larry Cohen did for Mobile, David Koepp did for the era of Alexa and Google Assistant and in fact I was very involved from start to finish. Zoe Kravits is great in Angela's role and most of the time, especially in the first hour, Angela is the only character we see in person as she interacts throughout the world mainly through text messaging, video conferencing and phone calls.
Kravitz does a good job of conveying a person suffering from the trauma of the past and reinforcing himself of the technological barriers that allow him to survive and work in the 21st century, and the film provides a solid arc to him in his "Hedgehog Dilemma".
where he defends and strengthens himself but must learn to put down his defenses and trust in people and the world again. Kravitz and Byron Bowers have a strong chemistry in their relationship and you find Bowers frustrated with trying to understand Angela's trauma while also trying to persuade her to get out of his apartment with him. In addition to Bowers, the film also features a solid supporting cast that appears throughout the film including David Wain, Andy Daly, Jacob Vargas, and several others who help sell the script. Soderbergh does a great job crafting modern thrillers while using classic thriller tropes that can be traced to the likes of Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Donen. While the film falls under the "Covid films" umbrella, we've seen films as (relatively) high-end movies like Mockingbird or Locked Down to direct-to-video movies like The Covid Killer or Corona: Fear Is a Virus, KIMI is the first one I feel that really works for the kind of movie it's trying to make.
Many of the films even mention Michael Bay and Mockingbird or Locked Down with the resources of Steven Knight often feels like urgent "Temporary hot strike" movies designed to capture people with timely default and a little more support for him. Soderbergh and Koepp feel they are taking advantage of the Covid pandemic to tell a story and explore its effect on characters, but never feel like timekeeping is used as a gimmick. Soderbergh brings his usual visual flair to the process as he uses Steadicam while we're inside Angela's apartment, but once we're out with Angela, filming uses a handheld camera and several angular shots to provide a visual image.
The rom is great for being good, and even if things are in the last third pale compared to the first hour, it provides a very entertaining payoff to Angela's arc with some dark, black humor in the way he uses Kimi. Koepp's script is also far less pessimistic and misanthropic about the material than I've seen with other films that try this kind of thing. One obvious sequence I liked was when two anonymous thieves in a van kidnapped Angela and a number of nearby homeless rights protesters tried to stop the van and pull it out of the van and help it stay safe. KIMI takes conventional thriller trappings and applies it to our modern-day world without feeling like "headlinesploitation". With a solid script, great direction, and a fantastic performance by Zoe Kravitz, Soderbergh continues to show his strength as a versatile director taking what could've been an average thriller and elevating it with his style.
