The Chinese Widow (Chinese :), also known as In Harm's Way and The Hidden Soldier, is a 2017 Chinese war drama film directed by Danish director Bille August, with Liu Yifei and Emile Hirsch. It premiered at the Shanghai International Film Festival 2017 as an opening film and was released on November 10, 2017 in mainland China.
Jack is an American Air Force pilot with a mission to carry out the first Tokyo bombing in the USA. After the mission was successful, his aircraft was disconnected from the rest of the squadron due to bad weather. With low fuel, he was forced to go to China's Zhejiang Province. Due to a non-working autopilot, he had to fly the aircraft manually while his crew was parachuting and he jumped out at the last moment before the plane crashed.
The next day, a local widow named Ying finds his unconscious body, living with her daughter Nunu weaving silk. He hides it in a nearby cave with the help of his childhood friend and village head Kai. Shortly afterwards, the Imperial Japanese Army (which had captured and executed the rest of Jack's crew) searched for Jack and captured the village, trapping Kai at gunpoint to reveal where the pilot was hiding. Kai refused to do so and was executed. Nunu encourages Ying to tell his grandmother and grandmother what she knows but Ying doesn't, remembering Kai's advice not to tell anyone. The next day, he goes to the cave with some food and sees Jack consciously, leaves him there and rushes back before he can face.
The Japanese army sends a search patrol in the woods and Ying is forced to take Jack to his house. Although he is distant at first, Jack quickly becomes a friend of Nunu by whistling Yankee Doodle to him. Jack is able to convey to Ying that he has to going to Chongqing where the US Army base is. She hid in the basement, as she tried to find a way to contact Chinese guerrillas to give her a safe passage. One day, while Nunu is at her school, IJA Captain Shimamoto comes to Ying's house and tries to rape her, only to be shot in the head by Jack. They hide their bodies in the basement and as Jack comforts Ying, they form a close knot.
At school, Nunu accidentally whistles a Yankee Doodle that his teacher notices. Master then rushes to Ying's house with Nunu and confronts Jack, reveals that he is with Chinese guerrillas. When Jack shows him the Captain's body, he tells Ying and Nunu to flee with Jack, as the IJA will execute them as soon as they are informed. As they flee, IJA finds the body and pursues the group after setting fire to the village. The Japanese eventually catch up and shoot them, and the teacher stays behind with some guerrillas to slow them down, and is killed. With the group only a few meters from the escape ship, Ying was shot in the chest by a shooter. Damaged, Jack kills the hidden and scarce shooter he escapes with Nunu and the remaining guerrillas.
In Chongqing, he reports to General Jimmy Doolittle, also expressing his desire to adopt Nunu. The general refuses to say that Jack cannot be a soldier and his father at the same time. In return, Nunu will be donated to a Chinese family living in Los Angeles. Jack reluctantly accepts and bids farewell to Nunu. 50 years later, old Jack writes a letter to an adult Nunu saying that he is truly in love with his mother and that although he is missing every day, he has made peace with himself. The address on the envelope where Jack had inserted the letter indicated that Nunu was at the address in San Diego, California.
