The story begins with Xuanzang, Wukong, the demon devil Bajie (Xiao Shenyang) and the noble blue sand demon Wujing (His Laws) downstream, still on their way to retrieve the scroll of the Buddhist scriptures when they encounter the River of God and are thrown into the river .. a hidden colony. In the endless chaos, Xuanzang spied on Queen (Zhao Liying) the pioneering Womanland Western Liang, and was a lover at first sight. The problem is, Womanland women have been brought up to believe that men are intoxicated, and the Queen's mentor and protector (Hong Kong veteran Gigi Leung) orders the immediate execution of Xuanzang and his crew. The Queen suffers from a fatal love affair, and helps the four escape. That's when the adventure begins, full of shocking pregnancies, ill-conceived misconceptions (!), A search for an escape across the Sea of Passion and highly insightful CGI deer.
Make no mistake, The Monkey King 3 is crazy, but in a magical and captivating way, with continued energy and another powerful performance by Kwok that is far more subtle than it should be. There are more than a few moments where the clever CG reveals itself, and in the late 2000s fashion, the action is so kinetic that it is almost unexpected. But this movie has its own moments: Xuanzang and the Queen's journey across a foggy and horrific sea; the possibility of Womanland residents being turned to stone where it stood; and the climatic sequence in which the angry River of God almost throws the trash on Womanland contains some stellar images. Not a shy kid of a scroll (seriously, that's a kindergartner-like piece of paper). Shaun Smith's make-up effect is strong, and it would be nice to see, and Cho Hwa Sung's bright and striking production designs are clear rather than making a mess of dark 3D glasses.
The Monkey King 3 doesn't need to be 3D, and that could dampen the romance - or refocus it. Once it becomes clear that Xuanzang et al's escape from Womanland relies on love as the key to finding the gate, the film becomes a boring romantic philosophy, with Xuanzang addressing his shoots romantic feelings and his devotion to his Tang vows and the Queen considering his task. , a world that is deeper, the vastness it could now see and the apocalypse prophecy. That's not a bad story in itself, but Feng and Zhao are a less-than-shocking couple, whose dilemma leads soap opera instead of forcing a crisis of conscience or identity, even if it develops within fantasy romp parameters.
The film's greatest evil, however, coincides with how Cheang and writer Elvis Man drop the ball on the unsuccessful romance of the teacher and Womanland herself. The sub-plot concerning a teacher's unrequited, complex love affair with the River of God is quietly understated, considering that Dewa is identified as male but the physical character itself is completely androgynous, if not completely feminine (and played by a female actor, Lin Chiling). It's a universal story that's more immersive (career or love?) Even without blurring gender lines. And even though it was a prosperous society free of men, when trouble struck, it was Wukong and Xuanzang who stepped in to save the day. The Queen unknowingly spends the final battle, and the usher goes around begging the men for help. After the action-non-reactionary female characters Wonder Woman and Black Panther, The Monkey King 3 feels like a missed opportunity to pass the baton from the movies to the Asian sisters.
