They decided that the country was too small for them, so they went to Kafiristan to become Kings in their own right. Kipling is considered as a character at the beginning, and at the end of this great tale.

In 1885 India, while working late at night in his newspaper office, journalist Rudyard Kipling comes to him by an apparently uninteresting tramp who reveals himself to be an old acquaintance Peachy Carnehan. Carnehan tells the story of Kipling about how he and his comrade-in-arms Danny Dravot, a former British Army sergeant turned adventurer, travel far beyond India to the remote lands of Kafiristan.

Three years earlier, Dravot and Carnehan had met Kipling under less favorable circumstances. After stealing Kipling's pocket watch, Carnehan found a mason's label on the chain and, realizing that he had plundered his fellow Freemasons, felt compelled to return them. At the time, he and Dravot were plotting to blackmail a local king, and he blocked Kipling by asking the British divisional commissioner to intervene. Funny thing is, Carnehan accidentally blackmail the commissioner to avoid being deported.

Frustrated with the lack of opportunities for lucrative crime, India has become more civilized and controlled - partly through their own labor as soldiers - and with little hope in Britain other than boring, low-wage jobs, the both turn in Kipling's office with a bold plan. . Leaving India, they would take twenty rifles and ammunition to Kafiristan, a country unknown to Europeans since it was conquered by Alexander the Great. There they would offer their service to a ruler and then help him overthrow his neighbors, but they proceeded to overthrow him and plunder the country. Kipling, after first trying to persuade them, gave Dravot his mason's tag as a token of brotherhood.

After signing an agreement pledging loyalty to both sides and swearing at women and drinking, the two embark on an epic road trip north beyond the Khyber Pass. Over the next few weeks, they travel through Afghanistan, battling thieves, snowstorms and avalanches, as they enter the unknown lands of Kafiristan. They happen to run into Gurkha soldier Billy Fish, the only survivor of last year's British expedition. Speaking English as well as the local language, Billy smoothed their way as they started to get up, offering their service first to the head of the heavily raided village. When a force is trained in modern weapons and tactics, they lead it against some hateful neighbors. During the fight, an arrow pierced Dravot's jacket but suffered no damage.

Both sides thought of him as a god, though the arrow was actually blocked by his leather bandolier. Victory followed victory, with the losers adding to the swelling army line. With their enemies defeated, there is nothing left to stand in their way, as they are summoned to the holy city of Sikandergul by the region's high priest. He recreates the incident of the arrow, to determine whether Dravot is a man or a god by seeing if he is bleeding or not. When his shirt was torn, they were amazed to see the mason's label around his neck. It contains a sacred symbol left by Sicander, their name for Alexander the Great, who had promised to send a son to rule them.

Calling Dravot king and god, they showed him the royal treasury, filled with the unimaginable amount of gold and gems he now owned. Carnehan suggested they leave with as much spit as possible as soon as the snow melted in the mountain pass. However, Dravot began to enjoy the praise of the locals, settle their disputes and pass laws, and even dreamed of visiting Queen Victoria on an equal footing. He is also enraged by the beauty of a woman named Roxane, Alexander's wife, and breaks their agreement to avoid women, saying he will marry her to leave the people as heirs. When he reluctantly approached her, he tried to kiss her, but she feared that touching a god would mean death to people, biting her cheek. Seeing him bleed, people realize he is only human and try to capture the British impostor.

More numerous in the ensuing battle, Dravot is captured and forced to walk to a rope bridge, where he sings the hymn "Son of God Going to War". When the rope was broken, he fell thousands of feet to his death. Carnehan was crucified between two pines, but after being found alive the next morning, he was released. His body and mind left paralyzed from his suffering, he finally returned to India as a beggar. Finish the cherries
